Puzzle Notes
Dear Friends:
Join us for another peek behind the trivia curtain. Note: spoilers from the 2/28 puzzle below.
Some trivia themes are such that the answers you're asking about are pre-determined. If your theme is "NBA team names," you know the 30 options you have for answers. Some of the magic, then, lies in deciding how to ask about them. For the answer "Heat," should you ask about an Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro movie or a fragrance by Beyoncé?
Other themes allow for more subjectivity in the answer set. In the 2/28 puzzle, we wanted answers that described a "Where's Waldo" scene. There's no authoritative source for that. For one answer we used "crowded," but we also considered "density," "crowd control," and "huddled masses." Another answer was "the gathering," but we also considered "neighborhood," and "community."
Neither of these themes is better than the other, and you'll see both types from us. As a solver, do you prefer one type over the other?
